Every year, on April 22, “Earth Day” is celebrated worldwide, the day when the movement for environmental protection was born.

This movement was born in the USA during a period when several remarkable events took place, including the suppression of a student uprising against the war in Cambodia by the use of firearms, the “May 4th Massacre”, the emergence of fiber optics, the success of the song “Bridge over Troubled Water”, the last album of the Beatles, the death of Jimmy Hendrix, a nuclear accident in South Carolina at the Savannah River nuclear power plant near the city of Aiken (unrecognized for 18 years), and very high pollution with gases and smoke, considered a “sign of prosperity”.
