World Environment Day

Today we celebrate World Environment Day, celebrated every year on June 5th.

The holiday was established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate the Stockholm Conference on Human Ecology and is the most important element of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Everything around us, the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink and the environment that makes our planet habitable, all represent Nature.

It is imperative to raise awareness about the environmental issues facing us:

  • pollution,,
  • overpopulation,,
  • global warming and
  • unsustainable consumerism.

Over time, World Environment Day has transformed into a platform accessible to the public everywhere, where each year a current theme is chosen and presented to the whole world.

Since the theme of World Environment Day 2025 is to stop plastic pollution globally (one of the most dangerous pollutions), we could mark this occasion by organizing an event or initiative for children, focused on clean-up actions and the restoration of Romanian ecosystems and/or ecosystems in the local area:

• Clean-up of a lake, beach, park or other natural area;
• Greening your home, school or public space with trees or spontaneous plants;
• Organizing a poster, photo or art exhibition (even online) showcasing the beauty of local ecosystems;
• ECO costume contests, made from recyclable materials.

Ecosystems are important because they provide us with invaluable benefits:

• A stable climate and clean air;
• Supply of water, food and materials of all kinds and protection against disasters and diseases;
• They are important for our physical and mental health and for our identity;
• They are home to precious wildlife.
