Europe Day

Europe Day Today (May 9) we celebrate Europe Day, peace and unity on the continent.

The date marks the anniversary of the “Schuman Declaration”, a historic proposal made in 1950 by Robert Schuman, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, which laid the foundations for European cooperation. Robert Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the cornerstone of the European Union.

On May 5, the Council of Europe was created and on May 9, the European Union.

A group of European politicians, most of whom had lived through the ravages of the two world wars, shared a vision of a united Europe that would prevent future conflicts between European countries. These politicians later became known as the founding fathers of the European Union. Their vision was that European countries would pool their strategic resources to make war between historical rivals such as France and Germany “not only unthinkable but also materially impossible.”

In 2025, Europe Day is a special day as we celebrate 75 years since the Schuman Declaration.
